As an OBGYN and MFM I thought I knew what it would be like to have preeclampsia. However, despite my knowledge and having witnessed how this disease affected my patients and their families for over 6 years, I had no idea how deeply it would change my life.
On September 12, 2022 I delivered my second son, Owen, at 31 weeks and weighing only 3 lbs 1 oz.
I did everything by the books, had access to specialists' personal cell phone numbers and I still felt helpless as I watched my tiny baby fight for his life in the NICU.
Up to 8% of pregnancies in the United States are complicated by preeclampsia, and hypertensive disorders including preeclampsia account for almost 15% of maternal mortality in the US.
The Preeclampsia Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) which assists in raising funds for Preeclampsia research and patient education including providing blood pressure cuffs to patients.
Checking my blood pressure at home with a home cuff is what pushed me to present to the ER and ultimately saved both mine and Owen's lives.
I am thrilled to be running and raising fund for the Preeclampsia Foundation through 140 over 90 run in order to fund research and blood pressure cuffs and help patients like myself and the people that I care for every day as a clinician.
