At Alabama A&M University, no student should have to choose between their education and their next meal. The Bulldog Market was created in response to students' growing need for food assistance on campus. The Market was initiated through funding from the AmeriCorps VISTA federal grant program and coordinated by the AAMU Service-Learning unit to provide free food and personal hygiene items to any AAMU student in need. Our mission is to support students facing food insecurity by providing supplemental meals and essential items to help them thrive academically and personally. Student need is assessed using a combination of financial aid indicators and feedback from students themselves. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, approximately 82% of undergraduate students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) rely on federal financial aid. In 2020, nearly 46% of HBCU students experienced food insecurity. This rate is nearly twice the national average of 23% among all college students. Post-COVID research shows that food insecurity among underserved populations, including HBCU students, has worsened. At AAMU, the Bulldog Market now serves over 200 students every day, offering essential support to those most in need.
