WJAB-FM 90.9 is a public radio station licensed to Alabama A & M University and operates under the guidance of the university's Board of Trustees. Established in 1991, it is the first 100,000-watt public radio station on a college campus in Alabama. WJAB is the Tennessee Valley’s only full-time jazz station, reaching listeners in parts of Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, and Mississippi. The station broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with one of the most powerful signals in the region.
WJAB 90.9 features a diverse range of music, including traditional and contemporary jazz, blues, gospel, and reggae. It offers several specialty shows that showcase global music and encourage listeners to broaden their cultural horizons. Additionally, WJAB is home to the Alabama A & M Sports Network, covering Bulldog football and basketball.
The station also airs National Public Radio (NPR) news, including award-winning programs such as "Morning Edition" and "All Things Considered," which are part of WJAB’s daily lineup. Public affairs programs and regular university specials are also included in the format.
WJAB is committed to providing educational opportunities, offering practicums and internships to students of Alabama A & M University. Since 1970, Alabama A & M University has produced exceptional students who have gone on to work with numerous local, regional, national, and international television and radio networks and affiliates.
