In April 2000, I made the life altering decision to work in Animal Welfare.  I had just obtained my license in veterinary nursing, and I decided to apply at the CAPITAL AREA HUMANE SOCIETY, thinking that working at a shelter sounded like fun.   Little did I know what I was getting in to.  I think that everyone who works at the SHELTER can tell you that it isn't a job, it's a lifestyle.  A wonderful, heartbreaking, rewarding, difficult lifestyle.  It is also what I was meant to do in life, and I feel honored and blessed to be here (for 23 years, now).  Every day is an adventrue, and I not only help animals, but I also get to work with the most amazing people who are genuine and kind.  

One of my favorite parts of my job is making trips to Southern Tennessee to tranport puppies and dogs, from high risk situations, to CAHS to be adopted.  Many of these animals come from the most heartbreaking situations.   While my job is mostly about administration, taking the time to be hands on with the animals, fills my heart and reminds me why our good work is so important (the photo above shows one of the pups I tranposrted this year).  

One of the toughest parts of my job is making sure that CAHS has the resources we need to help the animals that need us.  The past few years have been very difficult on nonprofits like the Capital Area Humane Scoiety, who are competing with limited resources.  Fundraisers like the Walk for the ANNIMALS help to raise these important funds.
