The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation invites you to share in our annual awards event celebrating the legacy of James W. Foley.

We seek those who value moral courage and share in our commitment to advocate for the freedom of all Americans held hostage abroad and promote the safety of journalists worldwide.

This fundraising awards event will take place at the National Press Club, in Washington, DC on May 3rd, 2023.

Your James W. Foley Freedom Awards Sponsorship will:

  • Help JWFLF prioritize the return of all U.S. Nationals by:
    • Supporting our 2023 Foley legislative priorities to:
      • Mandate a comprehensive review of efficacy of 2015 hostage enterprise structure to include the complexities of wrongful detentions of our citizens by state actors
    • Fully fund the Levinson Hostage Taking and Accountability Act for:
      • Payment of basic necessities including food, water, bedding, medicine during wrongful detention
      • Travel and medical expenses for upon release
      • post-captivity immediate needs including physical, medical, and psychiatric support
      • financial support for hostage or wrongful detainee family member needs including legal, financial, psychiatric, advocacy travel
    • Mandate transparent speedy wrongful detention designation for U.S. nationals and family notification
    • Promote codification of a U.S. hostage and/or wrongful detainee flag as well as annual national days of remembrance to include:
      • March 9th - Robert Levinson capture date
      • May 4th - Bring Our Families Home Campaign start anniversary
      • July 4th -  Independence Day
      • Anniversary of James W. Foley’s murder
  • Help JWFLF promote preventive safety education by:
    • Sustained outreach to all US schools of journalism/communication to include preventive safety education
    • Increase safety training grants to freelance journalists to virtual reality preventive safety training through HeadSet partnership
    • Collaboration with the Alliance for a Culture of Safety (ACOS) for independent journalists worldwide
    • Publication of 2023 Foley international travel safety travel guide
