Welcome to Participant's Page
Name: Robyn Stuart
Company: Virginia Tech
Title: Director of Alumni Relations for the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences
Goal: $1,000
Why I am Participating:
* Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US.
* Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for women ages 20-39 and 40-49.
* Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.
* 1 in 8 women will receive a breast cancer diagnosis in their lifetime.
* In Virginia 7,810 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
These statistics are staggering. They illustrate the impact of breast cancer on our communities and our families.
I am fundraising for the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation because I want to improve these statistics for the women in my life by increasing availability of screening, access to care, and research to advance treatment options and interventions.
(All the listed statistics were published in the American Cancer Society journal for clinicians in January 2023: https://doi.org/10.3322/caac.21763)

What is a Sole Star?
The Sole Stars campaign engages leaders in our communities as representatives in the fight against breast cancer. During the month-long campaign, each Sole Star will raise or give a minimum of $1,000, which will be used to support the work of the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation (VBCF.) The money raised through the Roanoke Sole Stars campaign will pay for breast health services like diagnostic mammograms, MRIs, ultrasounds and biopsies for uninsured and underinsured women in Southwest Virginia.
Sole (noun): the undersurface of a shoe; the sole is meant to provide footwear with the necessary support, giving traction and protection from the surfaces it will be in contact with.
