Name: Martha Glass

Title: Assistant Vice President Student Affairs

Goal: $1,500

Why I am Participating:

Breast cancer touched my life at an early age. When I was 19, I lost my mother to breast cancer, she was only 54. This October marks 29 years of life without her. I have seen too many people I care about have cancer come into their lives. Although a lot has changed in 30 years, we have earlier detection, better treatment and surgery options, and women with breast cancer often go on to live long lives, cancer always leaves a permanent scar on the individual and those who care for them.

I love my life in the New River Valley! My husband and I enjoy the beautiful surroundings – hiking and kayaking, cheering on the Hokies, and I love my job at Virginia Tech. Most of all I love my neighbors and my community. I know that the VA Breast Cancer Foundation cares about our community members too, in the NRV and beyond. VBCF provides access, advocacy, education, and community action for our neighbors. I’m proud to be a Sole Star and I would appreciate your donation.

What is a Sole Star?

The Sole Stars campaign engages leaders in our communities as representatives in the fight against breast cancer.  During the month-long campaign, each Sole Star will raise or give a minimum of $1,000, which will be used to support the work of the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation (VBCF.) The money raised through the Roanoke Sole Stars campaign will pay for breast health services like diagnostic mammograms, MRIs, ultrasounds and biopsies for uninsured and underinsured women in Southwest Virginia.
