Why We Are Participating:
Elizabeth: I am a registered nurse and am passionate about making sure that people have access to, and are comfortable receiving preventative care. In my role as an RN, I advocate for improved outcomes for the communities I serve and have a true passion for creating healthier communities. Early in my career, I researched, advocated and supported implementation of screening for critical congenital heart disease, which is now the standard of care throughout the United States and many other countries.
Like many, I have felt the impact of breast cancer through my family and friends. I recently had a mammogram with contrast, ultrasound and a biopsy and felt firsthand the fear and anxiety of waiting to find out if a biopsy is malignant or benign. I was reminded of how important it is to have access to state-of-the-art technology and compassionate healthcare providers.
I want everyone to have access to the lifesaving care that they need to fight breast cancer. Please join me and my husband Matt in supporting the important work that the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation does to eradicate breast cancer by raising awareness and funds in the communities it serves.
Matthew: I am a trial attorney serving clients throughout Virginia but mainly in the Richmond metro area. I became a lawyer in 2011 to help people who needed assistance during very trying times in their lives. Becoming an advocate for breast cancer awareness is just another example of that. I chose to get involved with Sole Stars because there is a common misperception about Breast Cancer - that it really only affects women. It affects us all and men need to be more vocal about their fight against breast cancer.

What is a Sole Star?
The Sole Stars campaign engages leaders in our communities as representatives in the fight against breast cancer. During the month-long campaign, each Sole Star will raise or give a minimum of $1,000, which will be used to support the work of the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation (VBCF.) The money raised through the Richmond Sole Stars campaign will help pay for breast health services like diagnostic mammograms, MRIs, ultrasounds and biopsies for uninsured and underinsursed women in the greater Richmond region.
Sole (noun): the undersurface of a shoe; the sole is meant to provide footwear with the necessary support, giving traction and protection from the surfaces it will be in contact with.
Star (noun): a celebrated, prominent or distinguished person; synonym: VIP · (very) important person.
VBCF Sole Star (noun): a very important person providing support for our mission to eradicate breast cancer by raising awareness and funds in their community and providing traction for our mission; willing to have fun while wearing awesome pink shoes!!
