Why I am Participating:
In 2020, at the age of 36, I learned that I had breast cancer. It knocked my socks off. Everything I thought I knew to be certain—growing old with my husband, watching my two young kids grow up, nurturing my legal practice as a new shareholder—suddenly felt under siege. Those days of uncertainty for the future, before I learned about and settled on a treatment plan, were among the scariest.
As I have journeyed through months of chemotherapy, multiple surgeries, radiation, and now the daily fear of recurrence, I have come to realize with gratitude and humility that I am one of the lucky ones. I never had concerns about affording my diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. I had the good fortune of a strong support system that bolstered me with love, the wherewithal to advocate for myself through the health system, a supportive employer, and—critically—good, affordable health insurance through my job. I was free to make decisions based on my needs, not what I could afford.
So when VBCF asked me to help with the Sole Stars campaign, I immediately said yes. Because no one should have to compromise their health and well-being just because they lack insurance. And I care deeply about eliminating the disparate impact of under-insurance on BIPOC women, especially. It is the right thing to do to help build this critical fund and support those most in need during what I know first-hand to be a very difficult and dark time. Every person facing a cancer diagnosis deserves the hope of a future that can only come with the full knowledge of what they must overcome. As I proudly lace on these pink shoes, I look forward to walking through this fundraiser with your support!

What is a Sole Star?
The Sole Stars campaign engages leaders in our communities as representatives in the fight against breast cancer. During the month-long campaign, each Sole Star will raise or give a minimum of $1,000, which will be used to support the work of the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation (VBCF.) The money raised through the Richmond Sole Stars campaign will help pay for breast health services like diagnostic mammograms, MRIs, ultrasounds and biopsies for uninsured and underinsursed women in the greater Richmond region.
Sole (noun): the undersurface of a shoe; the sole is meant to provide footwear with the necessary support, giving traction and protection from the surfaces it will be in contact with.
Star (noun): a celebrated, prominent or distinguished person; synonym: VIP · (very) important person.
VBCF Sole Star (noun): a very important person providing support for our mission to eradicate breast cancer by raising awareness and funds in their community and providing traction for our mission; willing to have fun while wearing awesome pink shoes!!
