Why I am Participating:
My name is Ashley Milam and am passionate about raising money for breast cancer so appreciate your support!
I am a 3-year survivor from DCIS breast cancer with microinvasion and was lucky my treatment was contained to surgery via a double mastectomy Feb 20, 2020. Since a teen I had identified lumps and bumps all remediated with surgery and all were benign. However in March 2019, I sought care for something that felt different, however, nothing showed up on either 3D mammograms or ultrasounds. I had to advocate for myself. Persistence paid off and my breast surgeon confirm my diagnosis on my initial biopsy and follow-up MRI identifying a 90 mm mass.
It's critically important to know your body, how you change, and be able to advocate for your medical care. Routine screening can also help save your life. In fact, after my breast cancer, a routine colonoscopy saved me with a right hemicolectomy.
Life is different now. I retired after 25-year career in healthcare - refocusing on family, friends, and taking care of myself. I now enjoy a new career in construction with my husband, exploring passions- exercise, nature, art, and live music. Life is too short for regrets, follow your dreams, forgive quickly, and invest in whom you love. In the end, you are the only one responsible for your one life! This is why I'm so passionate about supporting Virginia breast cancer funds to help educate advocate and eradicate breast cancer- as well as give women and men support and peace of mind for their health.

What is a Sole Star?
The Sole Stars campaign engages leaders in our communities as representatives in the fight against breast cancer. During the month-long campaign, each Sole Star will raise or give a minimum of $1,000, which will be used to support the work of the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation (VBCF.) The money raised through the Richmond Sole Stars campaign will help pay for breast health services like diagnostic mammograms, MRIs, ultrasounds and biopsies for uninsured and underinsursed women in the greater Richmond region.
Sole (noun): the undersurface of a shoe; the sole is meant to provide footwear with the necessary support, giving traction and protection from the surfaces it will be in contact with.
Star (noun): a celebrated, prominent or distinguished person; synonym: VIP · (very) important person.
VBCF Sole Star (noun): a very important person providing support for our mission to eradicate breast cancer by raising awareness and funds in their community and providing traction for our mission; willing to have fun while wearing awesome pink shoes!!
