Name: KC Bratton
Company: City of Roanoke
Title: Deputy Director, Real Estate Valuation
Goal: $2,000
Why I am Participating:
2011 changed my life. My best friend, hero and mother, Sabra Bratton succumbed to a 2 year battle with bladder cancer. No matter what form of cancer knocks on your door, the diagnosis is devastating. In the fall of 2010 a group of parents and myself started what came to be known as The Dave Ross Biddy Bowl. The annual event brings young football players together in their pink attire for a championship style game with local broadcast legend Dave Ross announcing the play by play.
The annual event raised approximately $25,000 with the goal of providing our moms in the greater Roanoke area with the opportunity to get information relative to fighting breast cancer. The annual event is held at Bogel Stadium where I stand in the middle field and I am reminded of the first and last game my mother attended of her grandson’s. It is also a time where The Bratton Family comes together give back to a cause that has come to mean a great deal to us; fighting breast cancer. A cure can’t be far away and we shouldn’t stop now. I miss my hero, and with every dollar we raise we get closer to curing this dreaded disease. There is young boy out there that will have is best friend, and hero by his side for many years to come when we find a cure!
Carpe Diem!

What is a Sole Star?
The Sole Stars campaign engages leaders in our communities as representatives in the fight against breast cancer. During the month-long campaign, each Sole Star will raise or give a minimum of $1,000, which will be used to support the work of the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation (VBCF.) The money raised through the Roanoke Sole Stars campaign will pay for breast health services like diagnostic mammograms, MRIs, ultrasounds and biopsies for uninsured and underinsured women in Southwest Virginia.
