My Why:
These summer camps have been a part of my world since I was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma in 2001 and continue to be a staple in my everyday life all these years later. My camp family has supported me during all stages of life; active treatment, first time camper, newly cancer-free, senior camper, first time staff member, return staff member, and most recently, a part of the director's team. I am honored to help foster the love, guidance, friendship, and growth CCC has provided me for 20+ years. I would not be who I am without this organization!
How You Can Help:
This will be my fifth summer as one of the Arts and Crafts directors for both Oncology and Sibling camp. As you can imagine, it takes a lot of time, energy, and supplies to make A&C the hot spot at camp that it is each session. Like the other areas of camp, we rely heavily on donated materials to stock our bins and shelves with anything and everything a camper might need to make whatever their heart desires. I would be happy to take any kids craft supplies you've got laying around taking up space if you're willing to give it up for a good cause.
Our biggest needs are listed below but we will take just about anything!
- Perler Beads (bonus if they're bags of individual colors)
- Assorted Pony Beads
- Parchment Paper
- Gallon Zip-Locks
- Crochet Thread (the large spools, all colors)
- Key Rings
- Shrinky Dink Paper (A5 or A6 Size)
- Sharpies / Permanent Markers
- Colored Pencils
- Tape (Masking, Duct, Scotch... any kind really)
- Tall Plastic Drawers (like the kind you put in a dorm room)
- Plastic Totes with Lids
- Stickers - any kind, as long as they are kid appropriate

About Camp Heart Connection:
Camp Heart Connection is one of Children's Cancer Connection's largest programs. CCC has been dedicated to providing camps for Iowa children affected by childhood cancer and their families for over 35 years. At Children's Cancer Connection they believe in serving the entire family through the entire journey, which makes their camp programming unique and unforgettable. CCC offers six different camp programs throughout the year including one weeklong Oncology Camp, one weeklong Sibling Camp, two weeklong Day Camps, a weekend Spring Family Camp, a weekend Fall Family Camp, and a weekend Teen Camp.
When Camp Heart Connection returned to full pre-pandemic formatting, hundreds of campers and their families had a blast were so excited to be back. Camp programs offer families time to connect with others who truly understand what they're going through and create lifelong memories. They don't have to worry about the cost because all CHC Camps are offered to families at no cost. At CCC, they are dedicated to making sure everyone can experience camp. No one is ever charged any amount to come to camp and CCC staff work year round to make sure every camper can have a magical experience!
