This is Hazel. Hazel began having seizures at eleven months old. The doctors diagnosed her with complex febrile seizures. A few days after her first birthday, she had a prolonged seizure that lasted over three hours. She was intubated and put in a medically induced coma. Even after that week of trauma, we all still had hope. Hope that it would end and this would just be something that we would look back on. Mike and Felicity thought they would take away all that they thought The Lord was teaching them from this trial and continue with their lives. After several days in a coma, Hazel slowly woke up. She looked at her dad and said, “Daddy!” It was as if nothing had happened. She had made a full recovery! She is resilient. After several more prolonged seizures, 911 calls, EEG’s, hospital stays and new medications, we had a diagnosis for Hazel; SCN1A positive. Several months later Mike and Felicity found a specialist close to home; what a blessing! The neurogenetics diagnosed Hazel with Dravet Syndrome during their first visit. This is a rare, catastrophic form of childhood epilepsy that will be lifelong for Hazel. She is six now. She takes medication six times a day. She loves her family, the color pink, going to church, and being in the tractor with her daddy! Her schooling is all done from home and she has a special teacher just for her that comes to their home to teach Hazel. Their life looks very different from many with so many limitations. Illness, heat, over-stimulation, and sunlight are all triggers for Hazel. They avoid Hazel’s triggers every way possible to reduce the amount of seizures she has. Hazel’s medically fragile journey has made us all appreciate life so much more. We don’t take the littlest moments of everyday life for granted and count them as huge blessings. Hazel is so incredibly sweet and always, always joyful! Despite the many challenges she faces daily, she loves her life and she truly touches the lives of all those she meets with her big blue eyes and gentle spirit!
