Those who know me well know that I've previously run two Half Marathons (21.1km or 13.1 miles). Each time I swore it was the last time. 'I will never run another Half Marathon!' I told everyone who would listen. However, those who know me will also know I'd do just about anything for both Disneyland and charities that I believe are changing the world.
Combining the two, I'm lucky enough to be running the Disneyland 2024 Half Marathon in California for Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism. I'm lucky enough to love and be loved by some brilliant neurodiverse folk and I'm thankful to be a blip in their universe.
After working with NDIS in Australia for almost 6 years, I recognise and encourage the positive impact that early interventions, therapies, adaptations, inclusion and support have on not only the person with a disability but on their families/communities as a whole. Since moving to the US, I now see first-hand how broken the healthcare system is. There is no NDIS that provides funding for speech therapy, support workers, inclusive activities or support programs. Many families have to self-fund therapies and programs which is almost impossible when coupled with the lack of public healthcare and abysmal minimum wages. Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism provides emotional, practical and financial support to help people and families affected by autism live life to the fullest.
I've committed to raising $1000 USD before I run with my favourite characters on January 14th, 2024. I would be forever thankful if you're able to donate, if that's not possible for you- I completely understand! I'd still love it if you could share this campaign around your social circles.
