Michigan Parkinson’s Foundation Mission Statement

The revenues from our fundraising events are essential to help ensure that no person with Parkinson’s in Michigan and their families are without quality care and support. The need for MPF’s respite care program has increased twenty-fold, providing $10,000 to families in 2018 to more than $200,000 in 2023. Over 13,500 individuals served through MPF exercise classes and 2,116 served through educational programs statewide. To date, we have been able to say “YES” to all that need our help with support from individuals like you.

Our Team Story

Welcome to Team Richard! We are so excited for year #2!

We are ready to continue carrying on the legacy of Richard Cathey II, a son, a brother, a uncle, and a friend that we lost way too soon. Join us to celebrate his birthday and help us reach our goal!

Richard Wayne Cathey II, a resident of Dearborn, entered the arms of Jesus on December 8th, 2022 at the age of 55.

Richard was the beloved son of the late Penney and Zoltan Nagy and Richard Wayne Cathey I.

He was the loving brother of Kelley (Sam) Villa, Lora (Jim) Grabow and Sarah (Dominick) Albano. He was also brother to two half sisters Laura and Stephanie Cathey.

He was the cherished uncle of Brittany (Mike) Stiffler, Sammy (Amanda) Villa, Megan and Emily Grabow and Isabella and Matthew Albano. He was extremely proud to be the Great Uncle of Jax Michael Stiffler born earlier this year.

He was a cherished nephew, loving cousin and faithful friend.

Richard was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ . He valued faith, family and friendships over everything else.  He was a hard worker.  Graduating from The University of Michigan Dearborn with a  Bachelors in Political Science.  His college days were full of many treasured memories and close friendships. He was a proud member of the TKE fraternity and recently attended a TKE reunion earlier this fall where he loved being reunited with so many of his college buddies.  After college, he went on to continue the growth and expansion of his lawn service Fresh Cut  Inc.  He was a dynamic and creative entrepreneur.  He soon transitioned to working for Delta Airlines. Sadly his career was cut short due to early on-set Parkinson's Disease in his mid-forties .

As Richard navigated his life with a disability, he chose to get better instead of bitter.  As a former professional bodybuilder, he remained as healthy and physically active as he could to the very end of his life.  He continued pursuing his passion for his hobbies: fishing, hunting, excellent fashion  and of course his love of art.  Richard was a #1 Vincent Van Gogh fan. He was proud of how he decorated his entire  condo highlighting his love for Van Gogh.  He enjoyed his many years of membership to the Detroit Institute of Arts.  He mostly loved spending time with friends and family.  He  was the biggest encourager and loved to make people laugh.  He enjoyed forever friendships from his neighborhood days on West Parkway in Detroit and life-long high school friendships as well.   Richard loved spending time with his  dad watching the fish in Flat  Rock. He also treasured his Sunday visits with Wayne. He was very close with his mom and missed her terribly.

As we grieve the life of Richard, we mostly want all of us to be inspired by his persevering and hopeful attitude.  Parkinson’s robbed Richard of so much. Yet, he NEVER would complain and always put others' needs before his own. He was quick to make a joke and make all of us smile on a regular basis. He was always there for every family member, friend or stranger who needed a touch of love and encouragement.
