Hello Friends,
Most of you know that Steve was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 15 years ago at the age of 48. We were so shocked and dismayed about what our future held. Steve taught math, coached football, and moderated several Cabrini High School student clubs. We were empty nesters looking forward to being active retirees within the next decade or so. Suddenly, Steve had a progressive incurable brain disease, and the future didn’t look so bright.
Connecting with the Michigan Parkinson Foundation has been a game-changer for us in dealing with PD gracefully. It was a lifeline during a very challenging time. We met supportive people who were living heroically with PD. They gave us hope that Steve could live a productive and meaningful life even with PD.
Through its free programs, seminars, online and in-person classes, and support groups we became “PD pros”. We learned how to manage PD symptoms and to slow the progression with drugs, surgery, and lifestyle changes including exercise and nutrition. We became involved in a Support Group and currently facilitate the Downriver/Allen Park PD Support Group. Steve introduced the pilot program PDSELF to the metro Detroit area with his friend Brian Cooper. (That is where our team’s name comes from.) He is currently a mentor for people who have recently been diagnosed with PD. I have learned how to be an effective “support partner”. The support of MPF has helped us to thrive despite a frightening diagnosis.
Now it’s our turn to help the Michigan Parkinson Foundation help other PD patients and their families throughout Michigan. Will you help us?
