Hello everyone. We are the Wong Family. I have been part of the bleeding disorder community my whole life. My father had severe Hemophilia A. When he was young the treatment was blood transfusion. Thankfully treatments have come a long way. Later in life he took factor daily. He has so much damage to his joints that he was in a wheel chair since he was 32. There were many many trips to the ER and to doctors. As a child it was scary at times to see my father in the hospital. But it also was our “normal.” I am a carrier and have had some bleeding issues myself. I unfortunately passed on the gene to my son Jeremiah. He also has severe Hemophilia A. My daughter Natalie is also a carrier. It’s been a scary journey as a mom. Wondering if that fall was a bad one or not something to worry about. My grandma always said she wanted my dad to feel free to play and “be a boy”. I try to keep that mentality too. But I watch him closely and often worry. The Bleeding Disorder Foundation has been such a blessing. When Jeremiah was only about a month old, I walked into the office without an appointment or any warning and Fran and the others welcomed me in gave me resources and encouragement. It was such a relief knowing I wasn’t alone in this. Now we have an amazing support group through the Foundation. We call it Buddies with Bleeding Disorders. As moms we support each other, share ideas, and encourage each other while our kids get to play with others who also have bleeding disorders. It has been such a blessing to me. That’s my story and why I come out every year to run.
