I deeply believe that no nation can operate under democratic principles without a literate society that can seek and comprehend the complex swirl of information that is required to both navigate and participate in it. The ability to read affords every individual direct access to the written thoughts, discoveries, stories and events of humankind - entrance into the "great conversation." With the ability to read comes the opportunity to learn, to choose, to decide, to determine.

Research shows that literacy starts in early childhood, that children who have access to literacy education and reading resources, who are given the opportunity to read successfully - to fall in love with books and stories - ultimately have far greater chances of success in life than those who don't.

Unfortunately, there are many who don't. Page Ahead maintains that literacy is EVERY child's birthright and works diligently toward that end in Washington State.

I’ve been a supporter of Page Ahead for many years throughout my career with the King County Library System, and remain so in retirement as a member of its board. It is a smart, evidence-based, successful organization with strong impact on literacy equity in our state.

I'm currently fundraising for Page Ahead's 2025 A Taste for Reading benefit luncheon to help build home libraries and build a love of reading for Washington children who really need them. The pandemic has made it even harder for kids in communities of concentrated low income to access books and keep their reading skills up—but giving children their own books at home, that they can read at any time, makes a very real difference, and a difference not only in childhood but throughout life.
