Please state the reason(s) you are supporting Project GRAD Akron and raising funds for the scholarship fund. I am a proud graduate of John R. Buchtel High School, class of 1972. Throughout my professional career I have continuously supported and encouraged the educational pursuits of students. I continue to do that as a mentor and advisor in retirement.
Name of your favorite teacher and what made the person special to you: My favorite teacher was Elizabeth Rice, my eighth grade English teacher at West Junior High School. She was very, very inspirational in encouraging me to pursue a career in education. My thoughts as a substitute teacher often turn to her and how she would handle situations at West Junior High School.
What were some of your most enjoyable times in school? Playing sports, particularly wrestling, participating in student council, student store manager, and singing 3 consecutive years at Westcapades, all a West Junior High School. 1st black student council president at Buchtel.
Looking back over the years, what advice would you give to your high school self or college self? Have confidence in yourself and never doubt yourself or your abilities. Get a mentor or several mentors throughout life. Be open to always learning. Move beyond your comfort zone sometimes.
Favorite quote: “Life Is Just a Minute” By: Benjamin E. Mays. I’ve only just a minute, only sixty seconds in it. Forced upon me, can’t refuse it, Didn’t seek it, didn’t choose it, But it’s up to me to use it. I must suffer if I lose it, Give an account if I abuse it, Just a tiny little minute, But eternity is in it.
Anything else you would like to share or highlight: My nieces, Chelsea and Naomi were a part of the very first Project GRAD Akron. Blake, and Francine E Blake and my daughter Jessyca V Blake who all graduated from Buchtel High School.
