I’m walking to support the incredible work being done by either the Palm Springs Animal Shelter or the Desert Wildlife Center—both dedicated to making a difference for animals and wildlife in our community.
The Palm Springs Animal Shelter is dedicated to promoting responsible pet stewardship and ensuring the humane treatment of animals. Every year, the shelter cares for nearly 4,600 animals, providing them with the highest standard of medical care and a chance for a better life.
The shelter's lifesaving programs include:
- Low-cost adoption programs
- Low- and no-cost spay & neuter clinics
- Trap-Neuter-Return programs for community cats
- Low-cost public vaccine clinics
- A pet food bank for low-income individuals
- Humane education programs
- Foster and hospice care programs
- Microchipping services
Desert Wildlife Center
The Desert Wildlife Center, located at the former Wild Bird Center in Indio, is soon opening its doors as a rehabiltation center for wildlife in need. Initially focusing on rescuing and rehabilitating wild birds, the center aims to save around 1,100 birds in the beginning before expanding to care for reptiles and mammals. The center's programs include:
- Rescue, treatment, and rehabilitation for sick, injured, and orphaned wild birds
- Plans to expand care to reptiles and mammals in the future
- A wildlife education program to inspire the community to advocate for desert wildlife
- Critical care and rehabilitation that promotes the recovery and release of wildlife
- A focus on preserving and supporting the local ecosystem by helping native species thrive
