Roman was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on January 19, 2024 at just 6 years old!  Roman started showing symptoms that his parents believed to be stomach bug.  After 24 hours and no progress made, they knew something was not right.  He could not hold down food nor fluids and was lethargic.  His mom rushed him to Sacred Heart children's hospital where he was immediately sent back to be observed.  Within a short period, the doctor advised his mom that he was being treated for "Type 1 Diabetes" because his blood sugar was at 980!  Not knowing exactly what that entailed, his mother immediately went to the blame game.. "Could we have prevented this?"  "Did we let him enjoy too many sweets and treat?"  Quickly, his parents learned this was nothing they could have prevented and type 1 is not the same as type2!

Since his diagnosis Roman has taken the news in strides!  Roman is known for his big and funny personality, so it was very important for his parents to not let anything slow him down.  Needles are now a norm in the Hall household!  After he was sent home, when family and friends came by to visit everyone would get a finger prick and have their blood sugar checked.  It’s been important that Roman feels comfortable and knows that he has a big support team all around him!  After many practice lessons on apples and other fruits, Roman is now able to administer his own shots!  He has even taught his 10-year-old brother to perform them also! 

We are so proud of the progress he has made this year!  He has not let diabetes slow him down.  He continues to play baseball with his Panhandle Dynasty team and do all the fun activities boys do!  We are excited to join a Camp Seale Harris camp so that he can increase his knowledge on this disease and meet other children that are fighting the same battle!  We are hoping to raise money so that we can offer a scholarship to other children that have this diagnosis but not financially able to participate.
