For Uncle Rene

On March 26, 1998, my Uncle Renee passed away from complications related to AIDS. I was only 15 years old, trying to make sense of the world and of loss. That day, before he left this life, he told me something I’ve never forgotten: “I hope you meet someone who will truly love you.” It was a wish from his heart to mine—a gift I didn’t know how to carry then, but one that stayed with me.

Fifteen years later, I met my husband. And, as if the universe remembered Uncle Renee’s wish, he was born on March 26—the very same day my uncle passed. That connection, that quiet thread between love and loss, reminds me that some blessings take time, and some people stay with us in ways we can’t explain.

To this day, I keep Uncle Renee alive. In memory. In stories. In the way I love. And in the quiet, beautiful truth that his final wish for me came true. I walk In memory of Renee Ayala my uncle.
