Sail Beyond Cancer Vermont provides free, three-hour, private sails for cancer patients, their caregivers, and loved ones. These special sailing excursions create opportunities for those being challenged by cancer to rebuild courage and make lasting memories. Anyone in treatment for any type of cancer, regardless of their age, income level, ethnic background, or other life circumstances is eligible to come sailing with us.
No matter where on the continuum of health and terminal disease a cancer patient’s prognosis may fall, the diagnosis of cancer and the treatments that follow bring with them commonly occurring experiences for the patient: stress, anxiety, depression, and unease. Our respite sails bring people together and help ease the stresses, fears, and unknowns that cancer brings to an entire family.
Our sails are conducted by experienced volunteer captains and trained crew on our 42’ Catalina 42’ and other private yachts. In 2024, we conducted 73 mission sails and took more than 280 individuals sailing on Lake Champlain.
SBCVT is unique in bringing diverse cancer patients, caregivers, and their families together on private respite sails. By ‘casting off the lines,’ these sails help patients enjoy their loved ones and feel ‘cancer free’ for a time.
