Why I Walk

I was induced at 38 weeks due to high blood pressure from Preeclampsia. I was hospitalized for a week after giving birth to my son, Avery, due to uncontrolled high blood pressure, along with other labor complications. Despite taking 10 pills daily to manage my blood pressure, I was re-admitted back to the hospital 5 days later since it was still not controlled. I spent another 4 days there while the doctors and nurses worked to find the proper medication, as my body was not responding to even the highest dosage allowed. I was separated from Avery for a lot of my first hospital stay, along with the entirety of the second. My blood pressure never went back to normal after the postpartum period, and I now have chronic hypertension, which is managed with medication. Although my experience was traumatic and something I am still grieving, I know so many mothers are not as "lucky." I knew I was still so sick after my first hospital release, but I wanted so badly to just be home with my new baby. I will forever be grateful for the nurse and doctor who had me re-admitted to the hospital because I know they saved my life. So many women have the same experience and symptoms I do, and their outcome is very different. I walk for all the women who are no longer here due to this horrible diagnosis, all the babies who never make it home, and the women who do not receive the early intervention they deserve.
