Twice Tried and Twice Prevailed
Why I Walk
I walk for my daughters, both born intrauterine grown restricted (4lb 10oz and 2lb 15oz) after third trimester preeclampsia. Now 6 and 9, they are fierce and strong and ready to take over the world.
I walk for myself, remembering the tears I shed when I was told that I would NOT be leaving the doctor's office after my 32-week ultrasound, that I'd be checked into the hospital for induction, because I was otherwise on the road to a stillbirth with blood pressure of 180/90 and little fetal growth since 28 weeks. I remember the terror of the nearly 48-hour ensuing race between rising blood pressure and birthing my baby.
I walk in memory of Dr. Shalon Irving, a Centers for Disease Control epidemiologist and health equity researcher who lost her life to complications from high blood pressure 3 weeks after giving birth.
*My profile photo was lovingly taken by my husband about 10 hours into the harrowing 48. I was on a magnesium drip and sooooo swollen but trying to match my 3-year-old's happy energy.
