My Story
I was considered high risk after my 20 week anatomy scan showed that my umbilical cord was only two vessels while it should be three. It was also inserted marginally. “Whatever you do, don’t google” the high risk doctor said. Of course I was terrified but I was closely monitored for growth & thankfully there were never concerns. Fast forward to 36 weeks I was diagnosed with hypertension. The swelling came and wearing compression socks in the summer was a fashion statement that I do not miss. At 39 weeks I was induced due to the hypertension. My body took to the induction process well besides my veins blowing out. I was a “hard poke” and my IV’s did not like me. While in labor, the on call doctor came in and said “I’m sorry but I have to diagnosis you with preeclampsia, and it’s severe”. I was immediately hooked up to magnesium. I was warned that I would feel like I had the worst flu of my life, and boy were they right. Within minutes my body felt like it was on fire. I felt awful, and so sick. My perfect baby entered the world a few hours later, all was calm. He didn’t need any NICU time & the nurses and doctors had zero concerns. What a relief! I was one of the lucky ones, and I’ll never take that for granted. It was determined that my placenta had prominent syncytial knots & excessive amount of fibrin; “a potentially devastating complication of pregnancy”. Today, I’m still battling high blood pressure and need medication to control it. I have some kidney damage but I’m hopeful it won’t get worse & I can be the healthiest momma to my beautiful baby boy. I’m thankful for the incredible nurses and doctors at Women and Infants hospital for keeping me and my baby safe through all of this. I’m also thankful for my fiancé for keeping me calm and being my voice when the heavy brain fog was too much. Last but not least, I believe in our higher power and I know that God and some very special angels were with me. I pray one day we can find a cure.
Why I Walk
I’m walking because Preeclampsia is a leading cause of maternal and infant mortality. Together, we can make a difference to further the research that is needed to find a cure so that every preeclampic mom and baby survive this scary disease.
