Why I Walk

I am raising funds for the Promise Walk because I am a survivor!

My daughter, Frances, was born on 11/14/25. Her birth was relatively uneventful and I was discharged after a two-night stay. On the evening of 11/21/25 I was laying on my couch with the bassinet beside me when I started to feel my chest tighten and my heart pounding. I told myself that I must be feeling a little anxious and tried to roll over and get more sleep. I spent most of that evening and the next day convincing myself that whatever I was experiencing was just stress and lack of sleep. That I was completely fine. Symptoms worsened and I eventually went to my husband and very calmly told him that I thought I might be having a heart attack and needed to go to the emergency room. When I arrived, my blood pressue was 200/100, considered a dangerous hypertensive crisis. I was admitted and immediately began magnesium drip therapy. Fortunately, there have been no major, lasting complications as a result of my preeclampsia. But I know not everyone is so lucky.

As an employee of the American Heart Association, I hear about the ways cardiovascular disease and eclampsia affect women all of the time. But for some reason, I never thought it could happen to me. As I was laying next to my newborn daughter that night, there was a small voice in my head saying "Something is wrong, please tell someone" And I am so glad that I listened to that voice. I hope through organizations like the Promise Walk, we can continue to strengthen that voice for pregnany woman. Knowing the signs, symptoms and risks can save a life!
