Why I Walk

For nearly seven years, I've overseen content for What to Expect and BabyCenter, two of the leading sources of information for expecting and new parents. Through that work, I've learned so much about the warning signs that can make a life-or-death difference during pregnancy and postpartum. One of the most important lessons I've learned is that awareness saves lives — and that's why I'm participating in the Promise Walk for Preeclampsia.

Preeclampsia is one of the most serious threats to moms and babies. It can appear suddenly and progress quickly, even in otherwise healthy pregnancies. Many preeclampsia symptoms — swelling, headache, breathlessness — can be mistaken for run-of-the-mill late pregnancy discomforts. That's what makes awareness and education so critical: when parents-to-be know what to look for, they are better equipped to speak up, get help, and protect themselves and their babies.

I'm walking to help shine a light on this condition, to support research and advocacy, and to honor every family that's been impacted by preeclampsia. Every parent deserves to feel safe and supported, and every baby deserves the chance to arrive healthy.
