"Reading has always been a way for me to travel, explore, safely take risks, and learn from
others. It started with my mother, holding a book in her lovely hands, and welcoming me to
share in a story. In pages of a book I fell in love with words and the way an author could bring
forth a laugh, or connect me to a character's heartbreak. I love that reading the same book at a
different time can change my experience. To Kill A Mockingbird in middle school brought the
sweltering South and its racial tension to my Northern California home, but meant more when
reading it with my daughter and we both felt swollen with love and loss when Atticus says,
"Thank you for my children Aurthur" to Boo Radley, with such reverence, it still rings our like a
prayer to me. Reading has been a source of relationships to me, with my two children, my
classroom, and with friends during book groups. The shared love, or even criticism of a book
that I read with others is a connective thread."
