Support the Lighthouse in Spokane this winter!

This February, join The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc’s campaign for our Orientation & Mobility (O&M) program! O&M is the process of navigating your environment – a vital part of the human experience, and a natural barrier for those who are blind and DeafBlind to maintain independence and access to the resources they need.

At the Lighthouse, our O&M instructors work with each of our blind and DeafBlind employees so that they can learn to navigate not only their work environment but those outside of work as well. Our instructors work extensively with employees to learn routes to and from work, including public transit access, and often work directly with transit authorities to establish a mutually beneficial relationship. In some cases, instructors work with employees to establish routes to places like grocery stores, bus stops, post offices, and will help employees gain access to tools to help with navigation. Tools like a traditional white cane, adaptive GPS software, pocket communicators, dog guides and more.

The Need:

As you can imagine, comprehensive training takes time and patience. On average, our instructors spend more than 10 individual O&M sessions working with employees in Spokane, and more than 14 hours of service per employee.

Our goal with this campaign is to raise $20,000 for our O&M program, which will cover about 160 hours’ worth of training for our blind and DeafBlind employees. This training is crucial not only to their success at the Lighthouse, but also their well-being and safety as they navigate Spokane.

Can we count on your generosity to inspire others to support this campaign? The campaign will run through February, and with your help – we’ll exceed our goal!

How to help:

  • First and foremost – you can support the campaign directly by making a gift via the “Donate Now” button! Your contributions will have an immediate impact on individuals who are blind and DeafBlind in our community and our campaign’s success!
