This February, join The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc’s campaign for our Orientation & Mobility (O&M) program! O&M is the process of navigating your environment – a vital part of the human experience, and a natural barrier for those who are blind and DeafBlind to maintain independence and access to the resources they need.
At the Lighthouse, our O&M instructors work with each of our blind and DeafBlind employees so that they can learn to navigate not only their work environment but those outside of work as well. Our instructors work extensively with employees to learn routes to and from work, including public transit access, and often work directly with transit authorities to establish a mutually beneficial relationship. In some cases, instructors work with employees to establish routes to places like grocery stores, bus stops, post offices, and will help employees gain access to tools to help with navigation. Tools like a traditional white cane, adaptive GPS software, pocket communicators, dog guides and more.
