On Valentine's Day 2022 our little Logan was born a bit small. Living in Utah which has expanded screening for CMV, Logan was tested and found to have congenital CMV. A common virus that when either caught or reactivated during pregnancy can lead to profound complications, which often go undetected at birth and are not discovered until later in childhood. Due to this early screening, Logan was able to receive antivirals from about 1 week of life to 6 months. We identified hearing loss early (despite normal newborn testing). He has been in early intervention and physical therapy and can walk, run, and jump (sort of Logan style). We hope that our story can bring awareness to this disease, improve prevention, promote early detection, and further advocate for these children.

Our Story

On Valentine's Day 2022 our little Logan was born a bit small and because we live in Utah which has expanded newborn screening for congenital CMV, he was tested for the virus and found to be positive.  CMV is a common virus that when either caught or reactivated during pregnancy can lead to profound complications.  With his early diagnosis, Logan was able to receive antivirals from about 1 week of life to 6 months and we identified progressive hearing loss early around 1 year.  He was closely monitored and supported through early intervention and physical therapy.  Now Logan can talk, walk, run, and jump (sort of Logan style).   He is determined to do everything his friends and siblings can do and he does so with the best attitude and laugh.  While the hope for the future is to eliminate cCMV, we hope that our story can bring awareness to this disease, improve prevention, promote early detection, and further advocate for these children.

How common is congenital CMV (cCMV)?

1 in 200 babies is born with it.  While most babies are asymptomatic, many develop significant disabilities like hearing or vision loss, cerebral palsy, or developmental delays. In the most severe cases, cCMV can cause epilepsy, microcephaly, or even death.   

Most surprisingly cCMV is shockingly unknown with less than 10% of mothers having heard of cCMV.  

Can cCMV be prevented? 

While there is not a vaccine available currently, there are ways to reduce the risk of transmission.  We can educate pregnant women about these methods.  Visit the National CMV Foundation website to learn more.
