Mary Beck has been a driving force behind SECU Family House since its earliest days. Drawing on her leadership at UNC Hospitals and deep relationships across the health system, university, and local community, she played a pivotal role in securing support, land, and approvals necessary to bring Family House to life. As a longtime board member, advisor, and member of the Building Committee, Mary helped guide both the original construction and subsequent expansion of the House, ensuring its continued growth and stability. More than two decades later, she remains a dedicated supporter whose vision, expertise, philanthropy, and advocacy have helped make Family House a lasting resource for thousands of families receiving care at UNC Hospitals.
Dr. Matthew Ewend has played a transformative role in the growth and success of SECU Family House. As Board President during the House’s major expansion, he provided visionary leadership through the planning, fundraising, design, and construction of the project that nearly doubled our capacity to serve families seeking care at UNC Hospitals. A respected physician leader at UNC Health, Dr. Ewend generously shared his expertise, advocacy, and personal philanthropy to advance the mission of Family House. His dedication helped ensure that thousands more patients and loved ones have access to affordable lodging and support during times of medical crisis, leaving a legacy for families across North Carolina.
The Gala is an evening of celebration and philanthropy benefiting SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals. Funds raised help ensure that patients and their loved ones traveling to UNC Hospitals for life-saving treatment have access to affordable lodging, comfort, and support during a difficult time. The evening features a cocktail reception, silent and live auctions, a seated dinner, a brief program, music, and dancing.
