As a longtime board member, advisor, and member of the Building Committee, Mary helped guide both the original construction and subsequent expansion of the House, ensuring its continued growth and stability. More than two decades later, she remains a dedicated supporter whose vision, expertise, philanthropy, and advocacy have helped make Family House a lasting resource for thousands of families receiving care at UNC Hospitals.

Dr. Matthew Ewend has played a transformative role in the growth and success of SECU Family House. As Board President during the House’s major expansion, he provided visionary leadership through the planning, fundraising, design, and construction of the project that nearly doubled our capacity to serve families seeking care at UNC Hospitals. A respected physician leader at UNC Health, Dr. Ewend generously shared his expertise, advocacy, and personal philanthropy to advance the mission of Family House. His dedication helped ensure that thousands more patients and loved ones have access to affordable lodging and support during times of medical crisis, leaving a legacy for families across North Carolina.
