Why I Ride

I ride because I believe in the power of community, resilence, and advocacy. While I am fortunate and privileged to say that no one in my family has been directly affected by cancer, I've witnessed firsthand the pain, strength, and unity of those whose lives have been forever changed by it.

Seeing the emotional toll cancer takes on individuals and their loved ones has deeply moved me and compelled me to be part of the fight. Growing up in the mountainous regions of northern Thailand, cycling was not a part of my life, but everything changed when I moved to America and discovered my love for the sport. That passion, combined with my academic journey as a sustainability major, led me to Texas 4000. In one of my introductory classes, I learned about India’s “Cancer Train,” which provides subsidized cancer treatment to victims of pesticide exposure. This eye-opening lecture highlighted how human health and environmental practices are closely connected, and it sparked a drive in me to use my voice and efforts to raise awareness about this intersection.

Texas 4000 gives me the opportunity to ride not only for those battling cancer but also to advocate for sustainable changes that can help prevent the disease in the first place. Through this program, I hope to inspire others to consider how our everyday actions affect both the planet and human health. Cycling thousands of miles may seem like a daunting task, but for me, it's a powerful way to channel my passion for sustainability and cycling into a cause that truly matters. I ride for those we’ve lost, those still fighting, and those who might never have to face cancer if we act now. I ride to fight cancer at its roots. I ride to create change—one mile, one story, and one life at a time.

If there is anyone you'd like me to ride for, please feel free to share yours or their story with me by clicking on my link and filling out the ‘Who I Ride For’ form. I’d be honored to carry their name with me throughout my training and bike from Austin to Alaska.

Thank you so much for stopping by and taking the time to view my profile along with learning about Why I Ride. I truly am grateful for all the support and if you have any questions or concerns, want to chat, or even just to share a favorite interest (book, movie, song, etc..), feel free to contact me at thupaw@utexas.edu. Thank you for being part of this journey with me!
