180,000 people live with dementia in North Carolina alone, expected to increase to 210,000 by the year 2025. There is no cure, although some promising research results have come out recently. Families face an excruciating uphill battle balancing taking care of their precious family member while living their own lives. Younger people, as young as in their 30s' are getting diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. Its heart rending! In NC, an estimated 358,000 dementia caregivers are providing 517 million hours of unpaid care each year. Dementia Alliance of North Carolina focuses on these families, supporting them via on call support, caregiver support groups, and respite care. They also fund local research. I have been fund raising for Dementia Alliance for 8 years, and also run a men's coffee hangout group for those who are actually navigating the disease themselves.
