Maybell's story

We had two labs that died within six months of each other.  I could not take the emptiness in my heart so I started to search for another pet through local rescue organizations.  They were so picky, and it seemed every time I tried to adopt they would come up with a reason in which to select someone else.  I finally decided that I would visit our local SPCA.  I had seen Maybell's photo on their website for quite some time.  I finally decided to go and visit her.  It turned out that she was heart worm positive and it appeared no one wanted her.  It was a Friday evening in February 2017, when I decided to pick her up and take her home with me.  We immediately made an appointment with our local veterinarian to have her checked out.  She was two years old, and already had multiple litters.  She was found by animal control.  Her puppies were dead inside of her and she came in weighing 38 pounds.  She was heart worm positive, and it appeared as though she was kept on a chain trying to get away as most of her back teeth are gone.  We put her through the heart worm treatment and it was successful.  She now weighs a whopping 56 pounds and is one of the most mild mannered, well behaved dogs I have ever met.  We have completed three sections of dog training and she has gone though and passed the Canine Good Citizen class and passed that with flying colors.  Maybell now goes to visit individuals in a memory care unit at a local nursing home once a month.  She gives back to our community by putting smiles on their faces.  We hope to visit other local places soon.
