When I first spotted Bella on the SPCA website I knew she was the one. I arrived in person to the SPCA and browsed through all the dogs, but worried the entire time that someone else would take Bella home while I pretended to be interested in any other dog but her. I ultimately returned to the puppy bin where Bella was housed (she was 4 years old and far from a “puppy”) because she was spoiled by the staff and she won me over with her tail wags and licks. I found out that Bella’s former name was Biggin’ and was also a staff favorite at the SPCA. They were very sad to see her go, but happy that she finally had a FURever home.
Bella was my first dog on my own as an adult and when I brought the sweetest and very overweight princess over to meet my family my Dad said “what is that?!” Partially because she was so *cough* well fed...., but also because I think he secretly knew deep down she would become his best friend. Over time Bella lost almost 10 pounds but never lost her endearing personality and overwhelming licking ability. She loved everyone, people and animals alike. Her greeting consisted of a smile and vigorous tail wag any time a human or animal gave her attention.
Now to the most important part of this story. In 2012, shortly after I adopted Bella, my father was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. He went through rigorous chemotherapy treatments that drained him both physically and emotionally. He battled weakness, nausea, and an overwhelming depression. It was difficult to get him to leave the house. Now cue Bella: AKA his therapy dog. It started as a one block stroll to the end of the road and back, but eventually led to walks lasting a mile or more. SHE was the only one able to get him up and moving. They both lifted each other’s spirits while both losing weight in the process. I consider Bella the most integral part in helping my Dad beat cancer. They never left each other’s sides and are still inseparable to this day.
I hope you guys like (love) Bella as much as my family and I do. She is the happiest princess with the most gentle heart. She even told me she’d donate one tail wag and maybe even a lick for every dollar raised for the SPCA!! So please vote for Bella and support the SPCA and Lakeland Fire Department!
