A little history first: A slave revolt in Haiti in 1791 led to the end of France’s notoriously brutal rule. Haitians were the first people in the modern world to free themselves and create their own nation. Yet--- two decades later Haiti became the world’s first and only country where descendants of enslaved people paid reparations to the descendants of their masters—for generations. Unfortunately, the United States did not come to the defense of Haiti. Lawmakers didn’t want slaves in this country to be inspired and to rise up here.
So it began---the fall of an extraordinary, prosperous country into poverty,discrimination, corruption and fear. During the last century, the country endured earthquakes, tropical storms, the murder of its President, falling into deeper decline. The de facto head of state, has become weaker and weaker as time passes. Violent gangs roam the country, kidnapping and killing, and taking over parts of the land, especially around Port-au-Prince, the capital. Residents are forced to leave their homes as the gangs travel from town to town. Half of Haiti’s 11 million people need food assistance. Only one percent of the population is vaccinated against COVID-19.
The good news is that the innocent school children that Future Forward for Haiti support are in the mountain areas and continue to attend school and still enjoy the lunches that we send to them. The distribution process has been difficult, moving the containers of meals through Customs and up the often-dangerous roads to Trois Mares and Chapottin. BUT, IT IS HAPPENING!
So...On Saturday, November 12, 2022, hundreds of volunteers worked together at Hope Presbyterian Church in Teaneck, New Jersey, and pack130,080 meals for the school children in Chappotin and Trois Mares, Haiti. The students need these meals now more than ever.
