This is CYFM's 28th annual mission to the people of Harlan, Kentucky!

Each year approximately 50 youths and 20 adults journey into the beautiful smoky mountains of Kentucky where unfortunately the poverty rate has risen above 40% due to the shut down of the major industry in the region: coal mining. We will be involved in several ministries while we're there:

Timothy and Gene will both be working on manual labor teams. In the past, manual labor groups have given families new roofs, built ramps for the disabled, installed hot water heaters, doors, and windows, and even built extensions for families who have grown unexpectedly (very often through adoption). These groups also often deal with mold brought on by leaky roofs and weathered walls.

An outreach group will work diligently with the community to connect donated clothes and children's books with families in the area. Three years ago Timothy experienced this ministry, and was amazed by the incredible sense of community in Harlan, almost everyone was more interested in clothes for a loved one than for themselves. 

There will be two other service groups. One of these group will visit with Harlan's large elderly community in a nursing home. And the other will host a vacation bible school for local children.

While we're there, we'll work to build a gospel community through our prayer and service. Our community is inspired by that of the disciples in the Acts of the Apostles. We have also found that the community which exists in Harlan is a great example of "gospel community," in Harlan everyone works to ensure that everyone's needs are met and they try very hard to ensure that no one is forgotten.
