Aimee and Thomas' Stories

Aimee was born with bilateral club foot and Thomas was born with a left club foot. Aimee has had multiple surgeries including a tibial transfer and as a result her feet are much straighter and stronger. They both have had multiple castings as well which have been very beneficial to their progress and have molded their feet to be straighter and much healthier. Through the amazing work of Dr. Nichols and her incredible staff we are completely at ease with the entire process and know they are in the best of care. Thank you to the entire staff you are all amazing!!!

Benjamin's Story

Benjamin’s clubfoot journey started in November 2019 one month after birth. He has endured serial casting, boots and bar and bilateral hip surgery since then. We love all the staff at Nemours! Bedside manner and communication is top of the line. Benjamin’s path is complicated by Arthrogryposis and Polymicrogyria but his determination and strength amazes us everyday.

David is 6 1/2 years old and he was born with left clubfoot. As a baby, he had eight casts, a tenotomy surgery, and then he wore his boots and bar until 4 years old. Thanks to Dr. Nichols and her amazing team, David is now able to run, play, ride his favorite red scooter, and participate in sports.

Sarah's Story

My name is Sarah Maxwell I was born with both of my feet severely clubbed. I am Miss West Deptford 2019 continuing my reign during 2020! I have had both legs cast, surgeries, leg braces, pins, donor bone, many band-aids, and inserts. And all of this is to help live a fully active life when we work hard and do our exercises; even with a disability anything is possible when you put your mind to it.

Growing up with clubfoot has been difficult. Buying shoes is almost impossible. Running is risky and not easy, walking schedules are a must-have, and you constantly think about your limit of activity, traveling up and downstairs. But when you set goals and you achieve those goals, it means you worked hard for it.

Three of my goals are to walk for a long period of time, walk in a straight line balanced and wear heels. One thing that I have dealt with in life is when I was in the pageant running for my current title. I had to walk on stage very nicely and elegantly, but I was either too fast or too slow and I felt very unbalanced because I have weak ankles and two different-sized toddler feet. Being 21 with feet under a size 3 is very noticeable. I had a goal to do my exercises and stretch and balance myself and I worked hard to make a one minute walk look easy.

Another difficulty is participating in walks. I am physically unable to do that because I know my limits and it is not easy letting myself have a limit. My way of dealing with it is to be a part of the fundraising and volunteer work this includes finding sponsors and checking people into the event that day. This is an example of how my disability has given me a disadvantage and I turn it into a positive.
