Created by Christian Pepe, Head Mixologist at the Pepe family restaurants: Little Napoli, Vino Napoli and Vesuvio in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

The “JA Hero’s Highball” was created by master mixologist Christian Pepe to honor the unsung heroes who have gone above and beyond to make a difference for JA youth: the educators, volunteers and JA champions who carried the mission through a challenging year. We salute their service and extend our heartfelt thanks and congratulations as we celebrate together virtually at this year’s JA Hall of Fame event.

Christian conceived this signature cocktail as a riff on the refreshing summer “lemon drop” cocktail, which is a favorite of bar patrons coming in after a day at Carmel Beach. Dry gin, a hint of spice, and the aromatics of fresh basil combine with the refreshing squeeze of lemon to make this the perfect drink for a summer evening. Christian’s creation calls for simple, easy to find ingredients in a straightforward recipe with just enough sophistication to evoke an evening in beautiful Carmel-by-the-Sea.

The green basil and yellow lemon wheel pay homage to the signature “green and gold” of the Junior Achievement brand. Enjoy your JA Hero’s Highball and thanks for supporting this year’s Virtual Hall of Fame. Cheers!

In a cocktail shaker, combine:

-  Sprig of fresh basil

-  2 oz. dry gin of choice

-  1 oz. simple syrup

 - 1 oz. fresh squeezed lemon juice

Shake vigorously. Fill a tall (highball) glass with ice. Pour cocktail over ice (with a strainer if possible.) Add a splash of club soda. Garnish with a sprig of fresh basil and a lemon wheel. Enjoy!
