Alpha Phi Alpha - Pi Theta Lambda Chapter

Fundraising for Stuff the Bus

The objective of Pi Theta Lambda (PTL) is is resolved “…to aid down-trodden humanity in its efforts to achieve higher social, economic and intellectual status.”  PTL works to fulfill this objective by preparing young people for post-secondary education and enabling access to the same via the distribution of academic grants; promoting civic responsibility essential to the governance of our democratic republic through voter registration and voter education initiatives; and providing public health and wellness education to adolescents by sharing practical knowledge and skills that aims to alter attitudes and empower young people to make well-informed decisions regarding sexual behavior, the reduction of teenage pregnancy, and the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STI). Other initiatives include: supporting the leadership development of college student, providing companionship and services to elderly members of the community, and partnering with other organizations that provide mentoring opportunities.

Project Alpha is a collaborative project with the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation designed to provide education, motivation and skill-building on issues of responsibility, relationships, teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases for young males ages 12-15 years.

The "Go-to-High School, Go-to-College" program concentrates on the importance of completing secondary and collegiate education as a road to advancement. Statistics prove the value of this extra impetus in making the difference in the success of young men, given that school completion is the single best predictor of future economic success. Through the Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College educational initiative, young men receive information and learn strategies that facilitate success.

"A Voteless People is a Hopeless People" has initiated as a National Program of Alpha  Phi Alpha during the 1930's when many had the right to vote but were prevented from voting because of poll taxes, threats of reprisal, and lack of education about the voting process. Voter education and registration has remained a dominant focus of this outreach activity. Currently, the focus has shifted to include political awareness and empowerment, delivered most frequently through town meetings and candidate forums.

Brother’s Keeper is a service program developed with the mission of advocating for and improving the quality of life for men, their spouses, and widows, who are retired, are elders, have disabilities and are ailing. The goal of the Brother’s Keeper Program is to promote dignity and independence among family and community members who need help in keeping their lives and homes functional.

Partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas, the Foundation provides mentors for a host of San Antonio-area youth.

Why Is Stuff The Bus Important?

The Communities In Schools’ (CIS) Stuff The Bus School Supply Drive is one of city's largest school supply drives that serves thousands of under-served students and families. Many of these families are below the poverty line and cannot afford all the supplies their children need to start their school year. The funds raised through this event will be given to about 150 CIS partnering schools (elementary-high school) across 12 school districts to purchase supplies for any student in need at that campus. The Stuff The Bus School Supply Drive helps to alleviate the stress of back-to-school expenses and allows students to focus on their education with the tools they need to be successful.
