On Aug 29, 2023 my life changed forever. When my foot got caught on a routine slide into 3rd base I fractured my ankle. After 6 weeks, there were no signs of healing. Same story at 12 weeks. After my orthopedist wanted to wait another 6 weeks, and still in a lot of pain, I sought a 2nd opinion. On December 1, after weeks of soaking my ankle in ice baths as instructed by my initial care team (a big no no for CRPS), I was diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). This explained my pain, why the fracture wasn't healing, and all my other symptoms. My new care team guided me through my options and took the time to listen to me and my concerns. After 4 lumbar sympathetic blocks (spinal injections), a year with a bone stimulator, and 13 months on crutches, I can gladly say I can walk again. While my leg will likely never be the same, I'm choosing to remain grateful for the fact that I can walk and pick up my boys again. It's a miracle that I attribute to all the prayers I received from friends, family, and my community. My story was very dark for a long time, but shows that there is always hope. Never give up.
