I became involved with The Woods Project a year and half ago when Travis decided to complete his clinical rotations for medical school in Houston. Our first week in Houston I was hired to be a Club Program Fellow--someone who worked at inner city high schools teaching camping and leadership skills to students during an after school club program each week. Throughout the year, I also led 7 weekend trips for our students throughout Texas state parks, worked with and coordinated hundreds of volunteers, managed tons of camping gear, and most importantly, led a group of amazing students on a 2 week summer trip through Tahoe Donner and Desolation Wilderness.
During my time with The Woods Project, I saw my students develop confidence, both within our group and within themselves, strengthen their communication skills, work across both cultural and language barriers to accomplish tasks as a team, and ultimately, understand that their experience and success in the backcountry and the woods had important applications back in Houston. They learned that hard work and perserverance pay off, and make life worthwhile, and you can't get through life alone, you need to overcome personal differences and work together. I saw my students come away from this experience as stronger people, and I too came away feeling strong, confident and empowered.
I saw my students see (and climb) mountains for the first time, swim in lakes for the first time, see stars in the night sky, enjoy solitude and time to reflect (something we all need and so seldom get, especially for these students).
In the past 6 years I have worked for and been involved with many non-profit organizations. The Woods Project is truly one of a kind and serves their mission better than any other organization that I know. For this reason, I have decided to lead another wilderness adventure this summer and would love your support. Thank you!
So incredibly inspired by you and what the Woods Project does for these kids Kels. Ty would be equally pumped to know that this program exists! Thanks for making a difference :)
Good work Kelsey. Keep up the good work!
