My Personal Fundraising Page
Welcome to my Walk for The Woods Project 2018 page and thanks for visiting. If you have made it to my page, you probably already know how much this organization and the students we serve mean in my life. But I wanted to share a few updates about my past year with TWP.
Last week Travis and I moved back to Houston to finish graduate school and I was offered a position with TWP as the Club and Alumni Programs Manager. Within this role I will have the opportunity to work with inner-city Houston students in a few capacities. I will manage 14 after school club programs, lead multiple weekend camping trips with our students at Texas State Parks, and lead two AMAZING trips this summer--one to the Apostle Islands with a group of our Junior Leaders and another to Desolation Wilderness with some first time backpackers.
Last summer I led a group of students through the wilderness surrounding Glacier National Park. Our students conquered 30 miles through rugged backcountry trails, saw the Milky Way and shooting stars for the first time, took the Polar Plunge into the icy waters of Lake McDonald, pushed their limits physically, mentally and emotionally, and ultimately learned how to communicate and support one another to build a safe and successful community in the woods. All of my students returned to Houston with more grit, adaptability, social intelligence, and strength.
This strength was immediately tested in the fall with the devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Houston. Many of our students have had to carry the added burden of temporary housing, extra jobs, and limited school resources. Now more than ever, our school partners and students are relying on generous donors to help provide these life changing opportunities for Houston youth. I would be so grateful for any donation you can make, but below are a few amounts that would be particularly meaningful! All my love, Kelsey
$75--buys a cozy warm sleeping bag for our students to use in the woods
$100--provides a pair of hiking boots to protect our students' feet
$150--a backpack for our students to carry everything they will need
$250--provides after school club programming for one of our school partners so that students can be better prepared for their time in the woods
$500--provides food for a group of 12 backpackers during their week long back country adventure!
$1200--covers the cost of a weekend camping/hiking experience for 50+ students in Texas
$3,100--sponsors one student for our entire program!
