I'm running with Martha!
Martha is from Marsabit County. When she and her 6 siblings became orphans, they went to live with their grandparents. Martha’s grandpa was a farmer who was able to pay for three of the children to go to some school before he passed away, leaving the family without any income. When her grandpa died, Martha had 2 school uniforms that she took special care of so she could wear them all the way through 8th grade. Sadly, she still sometimes got teased for wearing her old, tattered dresses. What made school even more difficult was that Martha kept getting sent home because she couldn’t afford the required textbooks. But Martha didn’t give up! She excelled academically and earned a well-deserved place at Daraja Academy. She loves the culture of unity and respect at Daraja. Her favorite subject is math, and in her free time she enjoys reading novels. When she grows up, Martha wants to become a doctor because rural communities like hers have very limited access to medical care.
