Join us for a gender neutral staged reading of SAINT JOAN by George Bernard Shaw. Celebrating 40 years of the DWC!
Pay-what-you-want donations accepted here in advance for guaranteed seats* or at the door (first come first served) via Text-to-Give, Cash or Check (payable to Downtown Women's Center.)
France, 1430. A young girl defies her class, her station, and her gender to lead the armies of France in their war against the invading English. Believed to be inspired by God, Joan spurs the French to victory and crowns a king of France - but some wars aren't fought with swords, and Joan finds herself in a different battlefield at court, where the weapons of politics and rhetoric can wound far more deeply than arrows.
The timeless tale of a woman in a man's world, our reading of Saint Joan contemporizes the tale of Joan of Arc with a gender neutral cast. Our event helps fight a different kind of war: the battle against women's homelessness. This pay-what-you-want reading benefits the incredible work of the Downtown Women's Center.
The Downtown Women’s Center (DWC) is the only organization in Los Angeles focused exclusively on serving and empowering women experiencing homelessness and formerly homeless women. DWC envisions a Los Angeles with every woman housed and on a path to personal stability. Its mission is to end homelessness for women in greater Los Angeles through housing, wellness, employment, and advocacy. Founded in 1978, DWC was the first permanent supportive housing provider for women in the U.S. Learn more at www.DowntownWomensCenter.org.
