Tyler is a beautiful 11 year old girl that was born with an extremely rare and complex group of congenital malformations, also referred to as cloacal exstrophy. She was born with her bladder and intestines on the outside of her body. Many surgeries have repaired her organs within her body, making them able to perform their functions. Tyler also required a major surgery to reconstruct her pelvic bones and at the same time put her bladder inside her body; it kept her in the hospital for over 8 weeks. Tyler has so far undergone 59 major surgeries since birth. Her last surgery that she had was on May 6th, 2016 spinal leak, and a tethered cord. This surgery was the 6th time since birth. After this surgery she was doing well and we came home. Tyler started having major headaches and the Doctors couldn’t find what was causing them. They had sent Tyler for a brain scan and MRI and nothing showed up. Two weeks later we wound up back in the hospital because she could not move her neck and the headaches came back. This time they figured out what it was but couldn’t do a spinal tap on her because of all her surgeries she has had on her back. Tyler was being treated for meningitis and was on isolation for 48 hours. They had to put in a picc line because of her poor vain access and be treated with IV meds. The complexity of her situation requires a tremendous amount of care at all times, to keep her functioning normally with respect to her bowel and bladder function. The success of her care is predicated on her caregivers having a thorough understanding of her situation, and all that it implies. She is at risk for dehydration, urinary tract and intestinal tract infections and obstructions, and has suffered significantly from these problems in the past. Due to the rarity of her Condition Tyler will need to have future reconstructive surgeries, possibly in out of state. The hope is that if she gets these surgeries in the next few years, she will have the potential to live her life as normal as possible.Tyler has been considered a miracle child. She has made tremendous developmental and medical gains since her birth. Tyler just finished up the 6thgrade. We would not be able to come this far without a wonderful organization called Angela’s house. How we got referred to Angela’s house was from my old High School English teacher that I ran into at Walmart when Tyler was 2 years old. I don’t think I would be able to do it without the support we get from Angela’s house. They have led us in the directions for the care for Tyler. They do so much in our community for the children and their families who have medical disability or a medical condition. They have helped us with getting the services Tyler has needed to improve the life she has. When Tyler was first born the doctors told me that she will never walk or run and she beat all odds. Tyler receives nursing, physical therapy, and home care services from Angela’s house. They have supported and coordinated services Tyler has needed. Tyler’s insurance does not cover all expenses on medical supplies. Thank god for Angela’s house that they have stepped in to assist us with the expenses. I am so thankful for Bob and the staff that makes a difference in all the children’s lives. We could not do it without them. For the hard times and challenges that we all deal with on a daily base it can only make us stronger people. Each day we are all gratefulfor our family and our children and we realize how lucky we have them.
