Most cancer stories take one of two forms: They fought valiantly and died or they fought valiantly and survived.

The narrative of those of us who live with active cancers for unprecedented stretches traces its own arc. We fight valiantly, are still fighting, and will be fighting for as long as we live.

For some people who are diagnosed with cancer, the disease is a part of their life. For those of us destined to live with cancer as a permanent condition, it is our life.

In 2018, the median life expectancy with my diagnoses of stage 4 lung cancer was 7 years. 20 years ago, there was only a 2% chance of surviving past 5 years. With research, current clinical trials, new and amazing drugs, and the active involvement of the ALK Positive Medical Committee & Grants provided by ALK Positive, our life expectancies are increasing every day.

The goal is to make this a chronic illness in our lifetimes. Think AIDS today vs 30 years ago. 

The medicine I take (Alecensa by Genentech) only gained FDA approval in 2017 as a 1st line treatment. It is because of this targeted treatment I am able to live such a "normal" life as a stage 4 lung cancer patient.
