More Research = More Life

I am fundraising to support research that will yield new life-extending treatments for me, all of my fellow ALK+ patients, and the future victims of this disease.

Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in the United States, following breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. However, it remains the deadliest cancer overall, claiming more lives than any other—more than double that of the next leading cause. This disparity is driven by factors such as limited public awareness and insufficient funding for research.

ALK+ Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) accounts for about 4-5% of all lung cancers. It primarily affects otherwise healthy, young individuals—many of whom have no history of smoking. Unfortunately, it is often diagnosed in its advanced Stage 4, when it has already spread to other parts of the body. The cause remains unknown. While remarkable progress has been made in treating ALK+ lung cancer over the past 15 years, much more is needed. Promising research is underway that may soon transform ALK+ lung cancer into a manageable chronic disease, or even a curable one.

The ALK Positive organization is a patient-driven group with a dedicated medical director and research committee working tirelessly to explore new treatment opportunities. My wife, Eva, serves on the research committee. Since its founding in 2017, this group has raised over $8 million for vital research. I’m asking for your support in this important fundraising campaign, especially during Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Until the end of 2024, all donations will be matched by an anonymous donor. Every contribution makes a difference.

* For those making a donation from a charitable fund to ALK Positive versus directly on the site, you are free to put an attribution in the notes of the transaction (ie, "in support of Derek Gefroh") which then will be counted towards my fundraising goal.
