The race proceeds support St. Joan of Arc Mawuuki, located in the Ugandan bush. The school was the dream of Father Simon Peter Kyambadde, a native of Uganda, who earned his doctorate from Mundelein Seminary near Chicago and lived in our parish of St. Joan of Arc Evanston. With financial support from parishioners in Evanston, the school opened in 2008 with 267 students.
Pre-pandemic, it had grown to provide opportunities for prosperity to more than 600 day and boarding students in grades preschool to 7th. Steve and I visited SJA Mawuuki in 2017 and were very impressed by the students, staff and campus. Unfortunately, the pandemic has exacerbated the poverty of this village and neighboring towns.
With your help, we can maintain this elementary school AND offer scholarships to its graduates who will struggle to find tuition funds to finish high school and university when schools re-open in Uganda. We can keep their dreams on track and offer the resources necessary to finish their education and improve the lives of their families and their community. Thank you for your support! Pam
